The Anderson Houses
An ongoing photographic, artistic and historical study of Alexander Ellis Anderson's surviving domestic architecture.
Alexander Ellis Anderson (1866–1935) was one of Northampton's most accomplished architects. Although aspects of his work have been documented previously, this project offers the first substantial contemporary artistic interpretation of his surviving domestic architecture through photography, painting and the stories of the people who live in these remarkable houses today.
The Anderson Houses explores Anderson's surviving houses through photography, painting, historical research and the stories of the people who live in them today. Focusing on a carefully selected group of homes across Northamptonshire, the project is as much about the lives connected to these buildings as it is about the architecture itself.
Where possible, the project will include architectural interiors, environmental portraits of homeowners and recorded stories, creating a contemporary record of both the buildings and the people who care for them before time inevitably changes them both.
The project will culminate in an exhibition at 78 Derngate, Northampton, in February 2027, bringing together photography, painting and research to celebrate Anderson's remarkable contribution to Northampton's architectural heritage.
This is an ongoing project and will be updated as the work develops.
