Some buildings ask to be looked at. Others ask only to be understood. The Z Mansion requires both.
Completed in 1898, The Z Mansion has lived many lives. Today, under the care of Aaron Avery and Avant Recovery, it continues to serve the people of Tucson in a way its original owners could have never conceived.
Like the city itself, the mansion has continued to evolve. Its latest chapter may be its most meaningful yet.
A Living Archive
When Aaron first contacted me about creating a portrait of the mansion, I thought I was simply painting an historic building. I was wrong.
The more that unfolded, the more fascinating the story became. The Z Mansion, the people who had walked its timber floors, the history of Tucson itself, the institutions that continue to care for its communities, and the remarkable stories that exist just beneath the surface all became part of the painting.
It wasn't really about timber or ornament. It was about continuity. About the way buildings quietly witness generations of lives.
The Journey Continues
I'm incredibly grateful to Aaron for placing his trust in my work. This painting has become far more than a commission and has opened the door to a body of research that continues to grow.
Through painting, I hope to continue exploring the architecture, history and social care legacy of Tucson, telling its stories through the eye of art.
